Hello! My name is Shabnum Jackson and I am the owner of SJ Interpreting.  

I am a wife, mum to 2 children and a sign language fanatic. I decided to start learning BSL in 2015, completing levels 1-6 BSL via leading awarding body for BSL qualifications- Signature. In 2018 I decided to continue my studies to become a fully qualified NRCPD registered BSL/English Interpreter, which I managed to achieve in 2022.

My experience working with Deaf people of all ages has allowed me to gain a true insight into everyday communication barriers experienced by the Deaf community, which is why SJ Interpreting was created. I take great pride in the work that I do and only aim to provide an outstanding service in the hope that we can help overcome these unnecessary barriers, allowing accessibility and inclusion for all.

Over the years, working amongst the Deaf community in a range of settings, has enabled me to learn and interpret BSL, whilst learning valuable information relating to their rich culture, history and heritage. I have met so many wonderful people from both Deaf and hearing communities and had the opportunity to work in a variety of interesting settings.  

Looking back on my training journey, everything I have seen, learned and experienced so far has inspired me to continue encouraging empowerment and equality for all Deaf people in all parts of life, whether at work, in medical settings, in education or socially.
